Here's another item from the archive, 10 years old this time, Amelia's Magazine from A.W 2004 (issue 2). They must have come into money when they put this out. It's thick with plenty of content, laser cut cover and die cut pages to make room for the added trinket, quite a job. The varied styles and design throughout is wonderful, and makes flipping through a really interesting and rich experience.
To top it off it even has a Alan of Modern Toss fame.
Over Christmas I've been rummaging through several boxes of books and paper ephemera stored in the cellar. One of my finds is this edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, beautifully illustrated by Tove Jansson (the Moomins). It's from the Delacorte Press in 1978, however the illustrations were first published by Albert Bonniers Förlag in Sweden in 1966.
The main colour plates are great, but the small detailing for chapter ends and in the margins supporting the text are truly wonderful.
I found this in a second hand bookshop many years ago. Although it's rather battered and all the guilt has gone, it's still one of my favourite books (as objects). It's The Dance of Death by Hans Holbein. This particular edition is from George Bell and Sons in Covent Garden and is printed by Chiswick Press (Chancery Lane) in around 1897.
It's a tiny book (12x7.5 cm) and completely black on the outside, including the page edges. There was once guilt inlayed on the title on the spine but I think the small embossed skulls and crossbones were just black. It's topic is how Death is ever present, no matter who you are or what is your status. It also includes a history of Holbein's illustrations which date from 1538. I love this book it's one of my treasures despite the condition.
I got given this lovely set of Animal Postcards created from ink blots and wet ink runs. They are by Rop van Miero and come in a pack of 10.

I've had this print for a while and love it. I don't usually post 'proper' Art on here but I've always meant to post this, as it couldn't be a more perfect reflection of the things this paper obsessed blog holds dear. It's an etching on paper, of the great James Joyce with Sylvia Beach (publisher of Ulysses) in front of her Paris bookshop Shakespeare and Company. Can't get any more 'bookish' than that. I feel very privileged to have a this.
